Most people drink coffee to bring them back to life in the morning – but new studies suggest it won’t only make you feel more alive, it could genuinely help you live longer.
Coffee is full of antioxidants and as such, can help protect you against age-related conditions. These conditions that can impact your lifespan are illnesses such as dementia, heart disease and cancer. Often, by changing your diet, you can prevent these illnesses from happening, and therefore can extend your life.
New research from the National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health in the U.S. recently revealed their findings from a 10-year study on 10,000 people. The research suggested that those who drank the most coffee, be it regular or decaf, were less likely to die from an age-related illness. This suggests that coffee has properties that can genuinely help you live longer.
The ingredients in coffee may have something to do with its beneficial health properties. Coffee is rich in antioxidants. It also contains plant-based compounds called polyphenols and caffeine. Polyphenols are plant-based phytochemicals, which occur naturally in plants. Coffee contains plenty of these micronutrients that can help to reduce cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and decrease the risk of diabetes and cancer, therefore reducing the risk of illness, heart disease and so on.
Polyphenols act as antioxidants such as phenolic acids. These are antioxidants, but they also have anti-inflammatory properties. There really are plenty of health benefits of coffee, perhaps due to coffee’s beginnings as a plant. Eating plants full of polyphenols means you reap the benefits!
In the study carried out by the American National Cancer Institute and the National Institutes of Health, they found the following results: Those who drank one cup of coffee a day reduced the risk of dying early by eight per cent. Anybody who drank two to five cups reduced the risk by 12 per cent, and those who drank six cups reduced the risk by 16 per cent.
So, what does this mean? It’s excellent news for those of us who love to drink coffee, that’s for sure. The more you drink, the longer you might live. Grab yourself a mug, and take a spoonful of your favourite coffee. Use your Billi tap and pour some hot water over the grounds and make yourself a hot mug of joe. You never know, that mug of coffee could help you live to 100.
