We’ve all been there, rushing out the door to work, school or college and grabbing the nearest plastic bottle that lies sitting on the kitchen counter. It’s so easy to just use the same plastic bottle over and over again and think that we’re decreasing our carbon footprint. However if we knew more about the construction and chemicals that went into creating the single use plastic bottles. It’s almost certain we would find another way to consume our daily water intake.
Researchers have found that some single use plastic bottles contain levels of the harmful chemical Bisphenol A (BPA). The UK’s leading nutritionist Dr Marilyn Glenville specialising in women’s health discovered that BPA can affect ovulation, and increase our risk of hormonally driven problems. These can include PCOS, endometriosis and breast cancer, amongst other things.
Not only this worrying problem, but refilling your single use plastic bottle can be a place for germs and bacteria to thrive in. A study carried out by KLTV news, examined water bottles which had been reused for one week and took samples from the neck of the plastic bottle.
Richard Wallace, M.D., of the University of Texas Health Center, told KLTV: “All of those grew lots and lots of bacteria that could make you very sick almost like having food poisoning, “That can cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea. Basically the worst vomiting you have ever had in your life.”
