Sparkling water is a great thirst quencher. On a hot summer’s day, the bubbles really hit the spot. Mix with cordial and it’s refreshing, zesty and always a hit. However, there are plenty of other uses for it too. Carbonated water may seem fairly inconspicuous, but as well as being great for drinking, it can be used for cleaning, gardening and cooking! Here we’ll look at the 10 most surprising uses for sparkling water.

Stain Removal – A mother’s method that actually works. Sparkling water can be used to lift particularly tricky stains. Next time you spill something, try rubbing the affected area with carbonated water. It works on wine, food and more. Remember, if you have a spillage while you’re eating out, most restaurants will have soda water so make sure you ask for some!

Cooking – Sparkling water can be used instead of still water in several ways in the kitchen. When cooking pasta, if you boil fizzy water instead of still, the cooked pasta will supposedly have a lighter texture! Similarly, if you use sparkling water instead of milk when making pancakes they will be lighter and fluffier when cooked.

Cleaning – Getting stains and dirt off bathroom surfaces such as porcelain can be tough. Sparkling water acts as the perfect cleaning agent to get rid of these tricky marks. Just clean with a cloth and wipe dry afterwards to prevent water stains.

Windscreen Washing – Carbonated water is great for getting rid of bird droppings and muck on your car. It can also help remove any greasy stains or fingerprints. Just spray your windscreen with sparkling water, and the carbonation will help to lift the mess.

Restore Hair Colour – Chlorine can, unfortunately, mess up artificial hair colours. If you’re an unnatural blonde, you may be familiar with green hair after swimming… If this happens to you, rinse your hair with carbonated water. Your hair will quickly return to its normal shade.

Stop Indigestion – Upset stomachs often feel like they will never go away. However, there is a solution. Sparkling Water! Alongside CO2 which is what makes the water fizzy, it can also contain sodium bicarbonate. Sodium bicarbonate is renowned for helping to settle upset stomachs.

Stop Rust – Carbon Dioxide present in carbonated water wears away rust. Just pour some sparkling water on the rust and then allow to soak for 5 minutes for maximum effect. This can be handy for rusted nuts and bolts you need to get loose. The Co2 will wear away the rust and sediment build up, meaning you can loosen them easier.

Clean Jewels – Wearing your jewellery every day means that gems can become dull and metal can become scratched and darkened. To combat this and get your jewellery back to how it should be, heat a small amount of sparkling water. Place your jewellery in the warm fizzy water for a few seconds then scrub any residue or dirt away using a soft toothbrush. Your gems should be left sparkling.

Marinate meat – This one is new to us! Did you know you can marinate meats in sparkling water? It makes the cuts of meat softer and juicier. Simply use the same spices and seasoning you usually would and work them into the meat before allowing it to sit in the sparkling water for 30 minutes.

Take travelling – Often, if you’re travelling abroad, water won’t be suitable for drinking. Take some bottles of sparkling water with you for drinking, and also use it for brushing your teeth. Sparkling water helps keep your teeth and mouth cleaner because of the carbon dioxide and bubbles!
